The day before the annual NAMM Show, Taylor Guitars traditionally presents a series of custom guitars that are only available at the event at The Catch restaurant in Anaheim, California. Called "Catch Customs," these guitars are built to offer finishes, design options, tonewoods and specifications not normally available through Taylor 's custom order program. Each guitar is handcrafted from the highest quality materials in the Taylor custom shop in the USA.
Tonewoods
The Custom GC C12ce #39 offers a very exclusive tonewood combination with a Hawaiian Koa body and a Sinker Redwood top . Redwood ceilings are cut from huge, ancient logs recovered from the depths of Northern California's rivers, where they have lain in many cases for more than a century. The topsides usually have a colorful colour spectrum , which is due to the unique coloring caused by mud and mineral-rich water. The age and size of these trees result in a dense grain and high stiffness, so that the wood usually has a fairly strong response. Koa is a dense tropical hardwood that combines mid-range focus with added brilliance and richness in the upper range. Koa's sound profile combines the mids of mahogany with the highs of maple.
neck and fretboard
A classic ebony fingerboard, as you would expect from a Taylor guitar, sits on a slim, comfortable, patented Taylor neck made of neo-tropical mahogany. The ebony for the fretboard comes from sustainable cultivation on Taylor's own plantation in Cameroon. The custom S-curve fretboard inlays made of shell and Hawaiian koa are particularly eye-catching and match the body of the guitar. The mahogany neck transitions into an ebony veneer Taylor logo mother-of-pearl headstock. Taylor's classic nickel tuning machines ensure the right tuning , whose deliberately simple optics does not distract from the beautiful wood body.
Design highlights
The matt finish allows the guitar to vibrate much better than with a thicker, high-gloss finish. The top is painted in natural, the bottom and sides have a shaded edge burst finish . The Venetian cutaway allows easy access to the high notes. The binding is also made of Hawaiian koa and stands out visually from the shaded edge burst finish . The Custom Single Ring rosette consists of many facets of Koa inlaid into a ring of Abalone. A special design feature is the "Bound sound hole": The sound hole has been elaborately framed with a second ring made of Hawaiian Koa.
Perhaps the biggest highlight, however, is the TaylorSense system : It monitors humidity, temperature, battery life and the stress on the guitar caused by external influences, such as shocks. In addition to monitoring the guitar's condition, TaylorSense also sends the data via bluetooth to the free TaylorSense mobile app, available for both iOS and Android devices, which sends push notifications when the guitar needs care.
