Meinl Byzance Traditional
A new era in Meinl cymbals production. Meinl produces cymbals in Germany using the “CAST BRONZE” process. One of the world's leading foundries melts the special Meinl bronze alloys and delivers finished rolled cymbals blanks to the Meinl cymbals forge for further processing.
The BYZANCE Traditional series cymbals, on the other hand, are manufactured using the “CAST CYMBAL” process, whereby each “individual” cymbals is cast as an individual blank. This is the crucial difference in the production of the new BYZANCE cymbals.
A production facility in Turkey that was completely rebuilt by Meinl exclusively produces Meinl BYZANCE cymbals. Here, the traditional Turkish art of cymbal forging merges in perfect symbiosis with the high-tech experience and know-how of a leading cymbals manufacturer. BYZANCE cymbals are made entirely by hand from the first to the last step. For the first time at Meinl , the starting material is a cymbal bronze with a composition of 80% copper + 20% tin.
The manufacturing process begins with melting the raw materials, followed by casting the individual blanks. These blanks are repeatedly heated in several steps and rolled out into flat disks. The top of the pool is pressed out using the hot process. The cymbals is carefully hammered into its form by hand, thus defining its own, individual sound . The cymbals are now turned by hand and thus receive their tonal fine-tuning. All BYZANCE cymbals are now being brought to the Meinl cymbals forge in Germany. Here they receive their typical surface finishing in a special high-tech process.

The Meinl company was founded in 1951 by Roland Meinl as a one-man company for cymbals in a basement workshop. Now family-run in its third generation, Roland Meinl Musikinstrumente has become one of the biggest names in the manufacture of cymbals, percussion instruments and sound therapy instruments with locations in Gutenstetten and Nashville, TN.
Meinl Cymbals are manufactured at two locations . Production is located at the company headquarters in Gutenstetten , Franconia. This was specialized in high-precision automated production and hammering and has been constantly modernized since the new building in 2003. The series, manufactured exclusively in Germany, include HCS, Classics Custom, Classics Custom Dark, Classics Custom Dual as well as Pure Alloy and Pure Alloy Custom.
With the introduction of the traditionally hand-hammered cymbals of the Byzance series in 2000, Meinl entered into a centuries-old tradition of cymbal production in the homeland of cymbal forging - Turkey . Since the new Turkish production facility was built in Samsun in 2019, production has taken place in a state-of-the-art factory. After production there, the cymbals are refined in the German factory and each one is strictly tested for optics and sound .
The cymbals range includes seven higher-level series, which cover a particularly wide range of sounds based on six different alloys. These include: Byzance, Pure Alloy, Classic Custom, HCS, Symphonic/Marching, Generation X and Artist Concept Models.
The range is complemented by drum gear - accessories for drums - from drum carpets to practice pads and embroidery bags to cymbal cleaners and tuning keys. Meinl Cymbals ' endorsees include some of the most successful and well-known drummers of this time, including: Benny Greb, Robert Sput Searight, Matt Garstka, Anika Nilles, Mike Johnston, Jost Nickel, Chris Coleman, Luke Holland, Brann Dailor and Wolfgang Haffner.
To experience the complete Meinl Cymbals range with all your senses, we would like to recommend a visit to our Walldorf branch. On site we are home to the first Meinl flagship store in Europe , where you can find the entire Meinl Cymbals portfolio and even some special models and of course you can play and try them out.
