The Martin D-28 Rich Robinson in detail
About Rich Robinson
Rich Robinson has been at the forefront of rock 'n' roll for nearly three decades, ever since his high school days when he co-founded The Black Crowes. Heralded as one of the best live rock acts, The Black Crowes went on to sell over 35 million albums and churn out several charting singles including Hard to Handle and She Talks to Angels, which Rich wrote the music for at the tender age of 15. Rich continued to forge his indelible music legacy as the founder and guitarist for the band Magpie Salute, whose 2018 studio album debut High Water I earned instant critical acclaim, while also reuniting with his brother Chris for The Black Crowes Shake Your Money Maker 30th anniversary tour in 2020-2021.
The D-28 Rich Robinson: Vintage feeling for Black Crowes fans
Martin is proud to bring you the Rich Robinson Custom Signature Edition D-28. This model is a guitar player’s dream, and it is the first model that Martin has ever made as a visual and sonic representation of an artist’s personal instrument. The instrument that served as its inspiration is a 1954 D-28 that was handed down from Rich’s father, who played it on stage at the Grand Ole Opry; as a traveling musician; and in his folk band, The Appalachians, during the 1950s and ‘60s. After inheriting his father’s guitar, Rich used it to write most of the original Black Crowes’ songs from the band’s studio albums. This soulful representation of that beloved guitar is crafted with Aged East Indian rosewood for the back and sides and an Aged spruce top. The entire body is finished with a very thin vintage gloss lacquer. It also features rearward-shifted non-scalloped bracing, which offers a very balanced tone and added volume. It includes some 1950s style vintage build characteristics, like Martin’s signature dovetail neck joint, authentic hide glue construction, an ebony fingerboard and bridge, and Aged nickel tuners. Another custom feature requested by Robinson is a bridge with the wings slightly softened for comfort. The model includes a specially designed label signed by Rich Robinson and numbered in sequence.

The company CF Martin & Co., or Martin Guitars for short, can look back on a long company tradition and some innovative inventions. This primarily includes the development of the dreadnought form and thus the western guitar as we know it today. The family business, with its history spanning over 175 years, has shaped the music world to this day. The innovations that Martin made standard in guitar construction include guitars with 14 frets outside the body and X-bracing. This allows the top to be more stable and max. weight capacity thanks to glued strips on the inside of the carcass ceiling. To this day , Martin guitars are famous for their high quality and of course their sound and are very popular among guitarists. You can find a large selection ready to play in our shop or in our branches. In our Martin premium western guitar section you will also find a selection of the highest quality western guitar models from all Martin series.
The name of the US company Martin Guitars, actually CF Martin & Co., Inc., has stood for the highest quality and innovations in the construction of stringed instruments since 1833. When everyone thinks of Martin , everyone immediately thinks of the western guitar, as the company founder and German emigrant Christian Friedrich Martin helped the instruments take on the form that we still know and appreciate today. The company's inventions include special bracing (X-bracing), the neck transition at the 14th fret and popular body shapes such as the dreadnought guitar.
In addition to the classics such as the D, OM, J, 000 models, our range also includes custom shop models - as well as signature models from renowned artists such as Ed Sheeran, Eric Clapton or John Mayer. We also have the popular Martin Backpacker Steel and the Little Martin in our range.
