The Hummingbird was introduced in 1960 as Gibson's first guitar with a square shoulder body. It came onto the market at the beginning of a new era in music and was quickly discovered and appreciated by the most important musicians in the scene. The Hummingbird model is world-famous and has been played by real music greats such as Keith Richards, Taylor Swift and Chris Cornell, among others. Inspired by this true Vintage guitar icon, Gibson's luthiers in Bozeman, Montana, in collaboration with Tom Murphy's aging gurus, have crafted a Hummingbird that matches one of the most popular 1960 design versions down to the smallest detail in terms of design and components , both visually and sonically convinced across the board.
Vintage features
Built with a thermally aged Sitka spruce top , the 1960s-style Gibson Murphy Lab Hummingbird Light Aged reflects the look and performance of an early Gibson icon. The instrument was painted with Light Aged Nitrocellulose Lacquer by the experienced luthiers at Murphy Labs. The Murphy Lab Light Aged finish, paired with lightly aged hardware, simulates decades of light playing wear and gives the guitar the unique character, charisma and feel of an original from the Golden Era of Gibson acoustic guitars. Of course, the Vintage cherry sunburst finish, the belly-up bridge and the historic Hummingbird pickguard are a must for this look.
Murphy Lab Aging
For 25 years, Tom Murphy has been reproducing the vibe and character of Vintage guitars. In collaboration with the master luthier, Gibson scientifically analyzed and chemically recreated the original brittle and brittle Gibson paint from the 1950/60s, which caused cracks under the finish . Each Murphy Lab-aged creation goes through its own journey through the custom shop and receives the Murphy Lab nitro paint, which is applied by hand. Each Murphy Lab craftsman has been trained by Tom Murphy to become an aging expert.
Case and accessories
The Gibson custom shop 1960 Hummingbird Lab Light Aged is delivered in a historically correct, black leather hard-shell case with yellow lining including a Certificate of Authenticity and plenty of case candy in the form of a Gibson Accessory package.

Die US-amerikanische Gibson Guitar Corporation, gegründet 1902 von Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, wurde zu Beginn bekannt durch die Fertigung von Mandolinen und Banjos. Heutzutage befindet sich der Hauptsitz der Firma in Nashville, Tennessee und Gibson zählt zu den weltweit namhaftesten und renommiertesten Herstellern von E-Gitarren.
Das Modell Les Paul, benannt nach seinem Erschaffer Lester William Polsfuss, ist eine der bekanntesten und meistverkauften E-Gitarrenformen aller Zeiten und begründete die Bauform der Single Cut-Gitarre, die von zahlreichen anderen Herstellern kopiert, übernommen und neuinterpretiert wurde. Die Les Paul wird hauptsächlich für ihren als warm und druckvoll charakterisierten Sound geschätzt. Auch der dafür mitverantwortliche Humbucker-Tonabnehmer, in seiner heute geläufigen Bauweise, wurde von Seth Lover bei Gibson entwickelt.
Anfang der 1960er Jahre erschien mit der Gibson SG eine weitere Solidbody E-Gitarre aus dem Hause Gibson. Zunächst als Nachfolger der Les Paul gedacht, wurde sie, auch dank Angus Young von AC/DC, zu einer weiteren Ikonen der Rock-Geschichte und ist die Grundlage für den Typ der Double Cut-Gitarre.
Mit der Flying V und der Explorer zeichnet sich Gibson für zwei Korpusformen verantwortlich, die zwar zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens, Ende der 1950er Jahre, ihrer Zeit viel zu weit voraus waren, aber im Laufe der Jahre ebenfalls Legendenstatus erreichten. Bis heute dienen sie auch als Grundlage für eine Vielzahl von Heavygitarren, beispielsweise von Herstellern wie Jackson oder ESP.
Der Gibson Custom Shop fertigt Auftragsarbeiten, hochwertige Einzelstücke und exakte Replikate berühmter Modelle und legendärer Jahrgänge ihrer Instrumente an. Oft werden diese auch einem künstlichen Alterungsprozess, genannt Relicing, unterzogen.
Fast genauso lange wie das Unternehmen existiert, werden auch Akustikgitarren produziert. So zählen die J-45, die Hummingbird, die L-00 und die SJ-200 zu den beliebtesten Westerngitarren der Welt und waren das Instrument der Wahl für Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley oder John Lennon.
