The Roland RE-201 Space echo , introduced in 1974 and produced continuously for 14 years, is one of the most legendary and sought-after effects devices of all time.
The analog tape echo classic has inspired musicians, producers and sound engineers for over four decades with its rhythmic, warm echo sounds and characteristic, highly musical quirks and peculiarities. With the BOSS RE-2, the sound and effect behavior of the Space echo Original is now transferred to the famous compact pedal series for the first time. Based on intensive development work and new technological innovations, the BOSS RE-2 delivers the coveted magic of the RE-201 in a compact pedalboard format. RE-201 Space echo: Simply legendary
The RE-201 was one of the leading tape echoes of its time. With its three equally spaced tone heads and an integrated spring reverb tank, the Space echo could produce almost any echo sound - from simple, clean delays to dense, rhythmic echo and ambient wash effects. The RE-201's legendary sound was influenced by numerous factors, including the warm compression of magnetic tape saturation, dynamic modulation from fluctuating motor speed, friction, and more. The last crucial ingredient for the sonic variety of the Space echo was the analog preamp circuit.
The rebirth of a masterpiece
With the RE-2 and its big brother - the RE-202 - the BOSS developers have captured in every detail the complex, non-linear behavior of the RE-201, which directly contributed to its legendary status. To do this, we analyzed several Vintage devices, including a flawless original from the BOSS and Roland factory archives. All factors that influence sound have been meticulously studied and recreated using completely new algorithms - including tape travel, recording/playback mechanism, motor running speed variations, preamp coloration, spring reverb character , and much more.
Travel into the depths of space
The RE-2 combines the great sound character of the RE-201 in the classic BOSS compact pedal format. You can use the eleven-stage mode selector switch to select the different virtual sound heads with and without spring reverb. In addition, the ratio of echo and reverb can be adjusted using separate level control . Every behavior is recreated in great detail, for example the gradual change in pitch via adjustments to the repeat rate value or the uncontrolled feedback when the intensity controls is turned up to full volume. In addition, all the natural modulations that are essential for the original Space echo sound can be created using the Wow & Flutter controls .
Designed for modern musicians
The RE-2 expands the classic Space echo experience with new and flexible features for modern musicians. Not only was the delay time doubled and a tap tempo input was added. The twist function can also be used to create expressive special effects when performing. For the dry sound, you can choose between the warm and fat preamp of the RE-201 or a clean signal without any processing. In addition to real stereo inputs and outputs, the dry signal can even be completely muted to create parallel effect setups or use the effect signal in studio productions. The RE-2 also supports the use of external foot switches or an expression pedal - including stepless, parallel control of several functions.
