Jens Rupp has been working as a piano teacher for 30 years. With this experience, he has created a textbook that combines his previous teaching methods and positive experiences as an educator.

“My first finger exercises” was carefully adapted to the concept of “My first piano school” and the sequel “My second piano school” and represents a practical help but also a useful addition. The 45 finger exercises included are suitable for the first and second year of lessons. They promote fluency, mobility, strength and endurance of the fingers as well as the coordination of the right and left hands. The often neglected, weaker fourth and fifth fingers are also trained. The well thought-out, logically structured structure of the short lessons makes learning easier and also motivates (from the second half of the book) with sound-effective exercises.

The first exercises in the basic C major position are played “in unison” (both hands play the same notes an octave apart). They also offer the opportunity to practice reading music from the “first notes”. Then both hands are moved in unison in the range of the notes of the C major scale. This procedure serves, among other things, for better orientation regarding the keys and note names. In the second half of the book, the finger exercises are mainly in the basic positions of the keys A minor, F major, D minor and G major. In order to create the necessary variety and to promote finger coordination and general orientation on the piano keyboard even more intensively, we now play less in unison. The exercises in minor key have an attractive sound, are easy to play, but effective and are a pleasure to practice. These also include exercises that are reminiscent of classics and rock/pop.

Since the time for practicing is often limited due to school or work, the concept of “My first finger exercises” is ideal for achieving the greatest possible progress with a relatively small amount of practice. This quickly leads to audible and tangible experiences of success on the instrument.
