Ukuleles

Buy from session!

Not only since Somewhere over the Rainbow have these small guitars of Hawaiian origin become increasingly popular.

Due to its small size, the ukulele is not only extremely portable, the manageable number of strings and frets makes it a particularly beginner-friendly instrument. The easily accessible chord fingerings mean that, with a little practice, entire songs can be accompanied quickly. As ukuleles are available to buy in many different bright colors, they also make wonderful gifts and make it easier for children to start making music.

If you are in the middle of buying a ukulele, you can find out everything you need to know here.

The most important features at a glance!

Strictly speaking, the ukulele is a small, four-string guitar, at least as far as its construction is concerned. An ukulele has a body consisting of a top, back and sides, a sound hole, a bridge to which the strings are attached and a fretted fingerboard. The material used is usually mahogany or koa, and only nylon strings are used for the strings. Unlike the guitar, a ukulele is tuned to C - g-c-e-a - with the thinnest string at the top. The D tuning a-d-f#-b is also common.

Which ukulele is right for me?

  • Soprano ukulele: The smallest ukulele, ideal for beginners. It impresses with its clear, bright sound and compact size.
  • Concert ukulele: Slightly larger than the soprano, it offers more room on the fingerboard and a fuller sound.
  • Tenor ukulele: With its deeper and more resonant sound, the tenor ukulele is ideal for advanced players and soloists.
  • Baritone ukulele: The largest ukulele with a warm, deep sound. Perfect for guitarists or experienced players looking for a fuller sound.

Find out more about sizes and types of ukuleles

A distinction is made between different types of ukuleles depending on their size. The smallest form is the soprano ukulele with a scale length of 35 cm. The most common is the concert ukulele, which has a scale length of 38 cm. There is also the tenor ukulele with a 43 cm scale and the baritone ukulele with a 50 cm scale. There are also very small, so-called sopraninos, as well as bass ukuleles with a scale length of 52 cm, but these are tuned e-a-d-g like a normal bass.

As the body size increases, the instrument becomes more resonant and therefore louder, but also lower in its frequency range. The best way to choose the right size is to pick up the different types of ukuleles and decide according to your own preference.

There are models that already have a built-in pickup system for use with an acoustic guitar amplifier or a PA. However, such a system can also be retrofitted, please contact our acoustic guitar departments. There you will also find a large selection of ukuleles from manufacturers such as KalaOrtega or Leho as well as matching bags, for example from Lanikai, but also ukulele stringstuners and songbooks.
