The saxophone reed

Like a flag in the wind

If you want to set the tone with your woodwind instrument , you can't avoid the reed . What the motor is to the car, the reed is to the woodwind instrument. If you remove the motor , the car stops. To break it down to the essentials and get to the point, there is no sound without a reed .

Traditional or hybrid

In its original composition , the leaf is made of wood or reed . Thanks to their fibrous wood structure, the traditional leaves can be set in vibration particularly well. More developed leaf variants can also be made of other natural or synthetic materials . In addition to the different sizes and thicknesses, the different materials simply offer the player an even larger selection of blades.

Reeds for saxophones

From soft to hard

In order to distinguish between leaves in terms of size and thickness , different manufacturers use different names . Similar to mouthpieces, these can consist of numbers , letters and special characters . However, the different strengths are usually categorized with numbers from 1 to 5 or common names such as “soft, medium or hard”.

Our specialist salespeople recommend

Our specialist salespeople recommend a light sheet to start with. The blade thicknesses between 1.0 and 2.5 or the blades labeled “soft” are best suited for beginners. Advanced players tend to use a medium blade strength of 2.5 and up . In the end, as always, you should pay attention to your gut feeling and your own well-being.

Wet leaves not only in autumn

Before use, leaves should either be soaked in warm water for 2 to 3 minutes or moistened in the mouth with saliva. Because only a damp leaf can be optimally set in motion.

A leaf in the backhand

Since leaves are consumable items , it is recommended to always have 1 or 2 leaves in reserve. As soon as the first traces of mold , cracks or even chips appear, you should change your sheet. You can find a selection of different sheets, matching sheet cases and accessories here.
