Effects pedals: but how and how many?
This edition of Olli's Getting Started is all about one of Olli's favorite topics, namely effects pedals and their order in the signal chain. First of all, it should be said that there is no 100% formula for success. It is essential that the effects devices are coordinated with each other and with your personal taste. The signal flow, i.e. the order of the effects , can be a good first guide for moving along. Even though you can and should experiment everywhere, the following list of effect devices has generally proven to be the most useful:
compressor → Distortion → Modulation → delay → reverb

What purpose do these individual components serve?
compressor: A compressor smoothes the signal and “thickens” it slightly at the same time.
Distortion: With a distortion pedal it is possible to create strong distortion even at low volumes. Professional tip from Olli: Combine several types of distortion (overdrive, distortion, fuzz) with each other for a more interesting sound and different distortion levels with just a few steps.
Modulation/ chorus: Modulation effects, like the chorus in our example, noticeably change the sound and are something of a “special effect”. They can be placed before or after distortion in the signal chain, depending on personal taste.
delay: A delay or echo is very pleasant for practicing solo playing and makes the sound more interesting. In more extreme settings, interesting ambient sounds or even a wall of sound can be created here.
reverb: A reverb or reverb helps to give the sound spaciousness and (room) resonance that is not present when playing quietly. Similar to the delay , exciting sound worlds can also be created with a reverb .
