Dunlop Plektren-Guide

Much more than just a colourful piece of plastic!

Welcome to our detailed Dunlop guitar pick guide! Whether you've just started playing guitar or are a seasoned pro, choosing the right pick will make a big difference to your playing.

Even our guitar guru Olli, who knows all there is to know about guitar, was proven wrong by the mastermind behind the colourful plastic picks. After a personal conversation at eye level, Jimi Dunlop said to Olli in his distinctive, smoky voice: "Try this!" and handed him a pick from the new Flow series. From that moment on, Olli's beloved green Dunlop Gator Grip in 1.5 mm thickness had become obsolete, although it had served him faithfully in his guitar life to date.

Which pick suits you and your playing?

In this guide, we want to show you that picks are more than just small pieces of plastic - they are the link between you and your instrument and are ultimately the key to your sound, your playing feel and your technique! Based on 8 important criteria, we explain how to find the pick that really suits you!

Material

Picks can be made of different materials such as nylon, Tortex, Ultex and many others. Each material has its own sound and playing characteristics.

Shape

The shape of the pick influences how it sits in your hand and how precisely you can strike the strings. There are standard, triangular and jazz shapes, to name just a few.

Thickness

The thickness of the pick varies from very thin to very thick. Thinner picks offer more flexibility, while thicker models provide better control and a more powerful sound.

Colour

Even if it seems unimportant at first glance, the colour of the pick can help you find it more quickly and adapt it to your personal style. In addition, the red Jazz III pick made of nylon, for example, sounds different from the black one made of Stiffo.

Grip

A good feel is essential to ensure that the pick doesn't slip out of your fingers. Some picks have special surfaces or grip structures.

Tip

The shape of the tip influences how the strings are struck. A pointed shape offers more precision, while a rounded tip produces a softer sound.

Edges

The edges can be either sharp, smooth or rounded. This is achieved by different manufacturing processes or by grinding.

Manufacture

A distinction is made between stamped and moulded picks. Punched picks often have sharper edges, while moulded models have rounder edges.

Picks Nerd Talk in the video

To accompany this guide, we have made a detailed video for you in which Olli Lohmann Flowman not only shares his private pick collection with us and talks about how Jimi Dunlop himself helped him find his new favourite pick, but also presents a nerdy deep dive together with Dunlop product specialist Philipp Opitz in which they explain exactly what you should look out for when choosing and buying your perfect pick.

Get ready to take your guitar sound to the next level and dive into the world of Dunlop picks that perfectly complement your individual playing style!
