What actually is metal music?
The term metal is short for heavy metal, which today usually refers to the original form of this music. The origins of metal lie in blues rock and hard rock in the early 1970s; it is characterised above all by a guitar- and drum-heavy sound. Since the 1980s, numerous subgenres have established themselves, with black metal, death metal and power metal, for example, becoming particularly widespread. With increasing stylistic diversity, the spectrum of musical techniques has also continued to expand, ranging from extremely simple, usually rhythmically very driving song structures to complex compositions with parallels to classical music, from extremely slow to fast-paced rhythms. The lyrical themes of the metal scene are just as varied as the musical accompaniment, ranging from pure fantasy to orgies of hatred, religion, melancholy and political social criticism.
Today, metal in all its styles is widespread almost worldwide and has long outgrown its niche existence. The best-known and most influential metal bands include Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Tool, only to name a few.
