Blues is a form of music that first developed in African-American society in the USA at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The early form of country blues contained elements of African, European and Caribbean music. The blues is one of the main inspirations and the source of much of popular music. Jazz, rock, rock 'n' roll and soul, among others, are very closely related to the blues, but elements of the blues can also be found in modern hip hop.
In the early days, the blues was only part of the repertoire of African-American musicians, but the social change in the 1960s led to an increased interest in African-American music, particularly among US-Americans, but also the British, and the blues also became interesting for white musicians. In addition to the increasing number of live performances, newly founded music labels that re-released recordings recorded on 78 rpm vinyl in the 1920s to 1940s also played a role.
Many British rock bands of the 1960s used the blues as the basis for their music and took this musical style back to the USA on tour. There, too, it was taken up again by rock musicians, who developed the various types of blues rock from it. Famous musicians and bands such as The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Peter Green, The Rolling Stones and Rory Gallagher were heavily influenced by the blues and each derived their own style from it.
