All about the Gibson Hummingbird Special

The Hummingbird in Gibson history

First introduced in 1960, the Gibson Hummingbird is one of the most distinctive and well-loved acoustic guitars ever made. Handcrafted with care in Bozeman, Montana, by Gibson’s expert acoustic luthiers, the new Gibson Hummingbird Special offers players a USA-built Gibson Hummingbird model at a very attractive price.

Tonewoods and construction of the Hummingbird Special

The Hummingbird Special has a traditional square-shouldered body constructed using genuine solid mahogany for the back and sides and a solid Sitka spruce top that is reinforced with Gibson's traditional scalloped X-bracing. This combination of tonewoods delivers a warm, balanced tone with excellent dynamic range that is perfect for any style of music. The “concert depth” body is slightly thinner than the body on a Hummingbird Standard, giving it a leaner and tighter bass response that sits perfectly in the mix and also makes it easier to hold and play.

Neck construction and fretboard

The utile neck is attached to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint, and like all Gibson acoustic guitars, it is affixed with hot hide glue. The neck has a comfortable Round profile, and the rosewood fretboard has a 12” radius and features pearloid parallelogram inlays, which is one of the visual hallmarks that makes the Hummingbird easily recognizable. The fretboard is fitted with 20 standard frets.

Features and design details

The traditional belly-up rosewood bridge is equipped with a TUSQ saddle, and the nut and bridge pins are also made of TUSQ. High-quality Grover Rotomatic tuners ensure rock-solid tuning stability. The pickguard features a simplified version of the world-famous Hummingbird pickguard graphics. The Hummingbird Special is finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer in your choice of Satin Vintage Cherry Sunburst and Satin Wine Red. It comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element Bronze under-saddle piezo pickup and active preamp.

All Gibson Special models are equipped with an active L.R. Baggs Element Bronze piezo pickup under the nut and an active preamp with an easily accessible volume control in the soundhole, so that the guitars are ready for the stage and studio as soon as you take them out of the Gibson Premium Softshell Case supplied.

Unlike typical bridge pickups for acoustic guitars, which mostly develop their sound depending on the string compression, the L.R. Baggs Element System was developed to capture the actual movement of the guitar top.
The heart of the pickup is a flexible sensor foil only two thousandths of an inch thick, which captures even the most delicate nuances of the guitar.

With the new Hummingbird Special, J-45 Special and L-00 Special models, Gibson is presenting new interpretations of three classic models that are inextricably linked to Gibson's history. These guitars are priced below those of the Standard series, which were previously the go-to guitars in the Gibson line, but above the visually simplified Studio models.

About Gibson

Die US-amerikanische Gibson Guitar Corporation, gegründet 1902 von Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, wurde zu Beginn bekannt durch die Fertigung von Mandolinen und Banjos. Heutzutage befindet sich der Hauptsitz der Firma in Nashville, Tennessee und Gibson zählt zu den weltweit namhaftesten und renommiertesten Herstellern von E-Gitarren.

Das Modell Les Paul, benannt nach seinem Erschaffer Lester William Polsfuss, ist eine der bekanntesten und meistverkauften E-Gitarrenformen aller Zeiten und begründete die Bauform der Single Cut-Gitarre, die von zahlreichen anderen Herstellern kopiert, übernommen und neuinterpretiert wurde. Die Les Paul wird hauptsächlich für ihren als warm und druckvoll charakterisierten Sound geschätzt. Auch der dafür mitverantwortliche Humbucker-Tonabnehmer, in seiner heute geläufigen Bauweise, wurde von Seth Lover bei Gibson entwickelt.

Anfang der 1960er Jahre erschien mit der Gibson SG eine weitere Solidbody E-Gitarre aus dem Hause Gibson. Zunächst als Nachfolger der Les Paul gedacht, wurde sie, auch dank Angus Young von AC/DC, zu einer weiteren Ikonen der Rock-Geschichte und ist die Grundlage für den Typ der Double Cut-Gitarre.

Mit der Flying V und der Explorer zeichnet sich Gibson für zwei Korpusformen verantwortlich, die zwar zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens, Ende der 1950er Jahre, ihrer Zeit viel zu weit voraus waren, aber im Laufe der Jahre ebenfalls Legendenstatus erreichten. Bis heute dienen sie auch als Grundlage für eine Vielzahl von Heavygitarren, beispielsweise von Herstellern wie Jackson oder ESP.

Der Gibson Custom Shop fertigt Auftragsarbeiten, hochwertige Einzelstücke und exakte Replikate berühmter Modelle und legendärer Jahrgänge ihrer Instrumente an. Oft werden diese auch einem künstlichen Alterungsprozess, genannt Relicing, unterzogen.

Fast genauso lange wie das Unternehmen existiert, werden auch Akustikgitarren produziert. So zählen die J-45, die Hummingbird, die L-00 und die SJ-200 zu den beliebtesten Westerngitarren der Welt und waren das Instrument der Wahl für Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley oder John Lennon.
