In the late 1980s, Paul Reed Smith asked Ted McCarty to advise him on guitar design and production techniques. McCarty had previously been employed by Gibson , which was also reflected in his guitar designs. In addition to serving as a mentor, he became a good friend to Paul and everyone he met at PRS . In 1994, PRS launched the first McCarty, an instrument that incorporated the full range of techniques and knowledge Paul had received from Ted, as well as his own experiences as a luthier.
In the 2000s, the McCarty received an SE version to give beginners and price-conscious guitarists the opportunity to enjoy the sound and feel of a real McCarty. The SE McCarty 594 is available with a mahogany body with a flamed maple top as a single and double-cut model, as well as the McCarty 594 Standard Doublecut with a mahogany body without a top.
